Howbrook Reservoir, High Green

This water is also known locally as Howbrook Dam, the water is about 3.5 acres in size and has plenty of bankside vegetation in the form of reeds and rushes. Fishing from any of the forty pegs is from either stone flags or solidly built wooden platforms. Access to the pegs is not the best, with some steep steps and as such not suited to the angler with disabilities. Parking for the venue is roadside on the A61 in a large lay-by, so if you wish to fish the far side pegs it can be a bit of a walk if you are carrying heavy tackle.

The water has some good depths with the shallower end dropping to 5ft whilst the deeper water by the dam wall is over 20ft. The centre of the water also has some very deep water.

In common with a lot of reservoirs in this area, Howbrook has some big shoals of bream with the better fish at a little over 4lb. A feeder with double maggot, or worm and maggot accounts for plenty of the bream, but they can also be taken up in the water on waggler tactics.

There are plenty of specimen sized carp in the water and on sunny days can be seen basking on the top. Big baits on heavy gear will give you the best chance of catching one of the better fish to over 20lb. The water also holds quite a good head of crucian carp as well as tench. These can be taken fairly close in with with expander pellet, although especially with pellet you have to hit the bites really quickly or the bait will be gone. There are some very decent roach and rudd present and slow sinking caster fished midwater will give you the best chance of putting fish in your net.

Directions: You need to leave the M1 at junction 36. Then take the A61 towards North Sheffield. You drop down to the bottom of the hill and then as you begin to go up the other side you will find the dam on the right, just after a tricky staggered crossroads. Park you vehicles in the long lay-by.
